The Belgian Rattlesnake
by William M.P. Easterly. Complete story ("Social and
Technical Biography") of the Lewis Automatic Machine Gun
and its inventor. The Lewis gun addressed the
overheating problem by utilizing the free flow of air,
reducing weight and bulk, and resulting in a practical
and lightweight MG. While US Marines and "doughboys"
were stuck with the French Chauchat, the Lewis Gun soon
became a favorite with British and Canadian infantry and
specialized "machine gun killer" teams. Aside from the
western Allies, the Lewis served with Russia, Japan,
Germany, Italy,
Holland
and Portugal. Two complete chapters on accessories, one
for the ground Lewis, and one for the air service
variations. Hard., 584 pages, 686 illustrations.
"
AS IT HAPPENED, MAJOR LEWIS HAD BEEN WORKING FOR SEVERAL
MONTHS ON THE USE OF AN INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE AS A
MEANS OF PROPULSION OF UNDERWATER TORPEDOES. HE
THOUGHT THAT THE SAME THEORY MIGHT BE APPLIED, BY USING
THE BLAST OF THE GUN TO "SWEEP" THE COOLING AIR OVER THE
BARREL."
PART i, CHAPTER 3, lEWIS DEVELOPS THE "AIR
EJECTION" COOLING SYSTEM - THE BELGIUM RATTLESNAKE
"THE TWO JAPANESE MILITARY SERVICES WERE INDEPENDENT OF
EACH OTHER, AND RECORDS INDICATE THERE WAS QUITE A BIT
OF INTER-SERVICE RIVARLY AND COMPETITION BETWEEN THE
ARMY AND NAVY. THIS CHAPTER IS CONCERNED SPECIFICALLY
WITH THE JAPANESE NAVAL BRANCH, AS THEY WERE THE SOLE
ADMINISTRATORS AND PRODUCERS OF THE LEWIS GUN, AND ITS
LARGEST USERS, THE ARMY USING NAMBU-DESIGNED LIGHT
AUTOMATIC MACHINE GUNS."
PART V, CHAPTER 20, THE LEWIS IN
JAPAN -THE BELGIAN RATTLESNAKE
Even though the Major Powers
declared the Lewis obsolete during the last days of
WWII, wherever there has been a conflict, insurrection
or border war since, the Lewis gun has been somehow
involved.
-EPILOGUE: GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN-
"The Success of his air-cooled machine gun with the
Allies during World War II did not stop Colonel Lewis in
his endurance to provide other weapons of his own
conception."
PART VII: PARALLEL DEVELOPMENTS, CAPTER 24, NEW LEWIS
RIFLES AND PISTOLS
